Client: Ballymac Friendship Trust
Project: Community Centre Facelift and Garden Space
Student Group: Ryan Berry, Callum Black (MArch 1); Jenny Hughes, Luca Garoli, Lee Donnelly, Susan Curran, Dylan Kelly (BSc 1)
The client’s brief: A disused alleyway owned by Ballymac Friendship Centre. Consider a design for a proposed garden on their current building to promote social and creative aspects of their community. Keep the garden private to maintain their centre boundary.
The group response: “Incorporating a vegetable patch into a multi use outdoor space, covered with a clear canopy to allow light into the dark alleyway. Colourful mosaic tiling and an outdoor blackboard which can be used as a projection screen and an area for BBQs, creates an outdoor space with multipurpose. Opening up the main hall to the garden provides a visual and spacial connection throughout.
“Creating paved areas of this glazed opening to the outdoors provides an area to relax in the sun. The main entrance was modified with vegetation and a similar external patio space to create an inviting and friendly approach to the centre. Wooden sliding shutters provide a canopy over the main windows of the hall, adding a dynamic element to the facade.”
